Microsoft has much more than 5 blogs
I think the 5 blogs at Microsoft is misleading unlesss you are looking at a very specific type of blog.
I can identify more than 10 blogs just dedicated to Unified Communications, and they have all sort of blogs for Partners, End Users, Developers, etc.
A lot of Microsoft employees have objectives based on customer engagement. In order to reach these objectives, blogs are essential for them.

Maybe I have missed the criteria to count corporate blogs but by their nature blogs are somewhat informal, so using criteria is not as easy.
Looks like Jon didn't look hard (RE: Microsoft has much more...)
The only thing I can think of is that Jon went to the blog page and saw their short list of 'featured' blogs on the blog search page. However, you can search for the dozens of more entries.
In fact if you go to the home of the IT Pro Blogs and click the OPML link, you find well over a hundered blogs for IT Pros alone. Not to mention the MSDN Blogs.
In fact, if you have an OPML reader, you can click the OPML link at the bottom of the search results and view all the blogs at Micro$oft.

Cisco's John Chambers Blogging
John Chambers will likely never be as prolific as Jonathan Swartz on the blogging front, but he is starting to dip his toe into the blogosphere.

Missed the boat on MS
MSDN blogs have a lot of stuff in them that does not appear in the product documentation. I visted them countless of times. The other blogs mentioned are fluff - most people are not CEO's and don't need to know about CEO stuff.
You could have said needs improvement but to list MS last in the big disappointment category is silly.
Microsoft has 1439 blogs (and growing)!!!
Hey Jon Brodkin!! Please actually read the blogs before writing your article. Microsoft has 1439 blogs listed on its searchable site. Many, many of these blogs are invaluable to users of Microsoft technology. The information available through these blogs are orders of magnitude better than any other vendor listed in your article. I really can't believe this article was written, much less edited, reviewed and published. Shame, shame!
Sun's CEO Blog is indicative of a broken company
Jonathan Schwartz should quit pretending he's a "hip, pony-tailed techie guy", quit wasting so much time blogging about how virtuous he is, and learn how to run a company--something he has so far proven to be completely incompetent at.
Blogs are all well and good, but they have no bearing on a company's policy, business acumen, or stability. They're just more personal diaries--like any other blog.
Avaya-- now with a blog
Actually, Avaya does have a blog. We've recently revamped our blogging, and the results are on display at www.avayablog.com. We're focused on contact centers, but not in a traditional way.
