RE: ID thieves have a 50-50 chance of going to prison

If I were to start a security blog, this article by Robert McMillan in Network World would be my first nominee for Annoying Article of The Day.

The opening sentence clues the attentive reader to the non-information ahead. "*If* you're a convicted identity thief, you've got about a 50% chance of *avoiding* jail time."[emphasis added]

Really? How 'bout some meaningful numbers? What is the conviction rate? How many folks have been brought to trial? How many have been charged and pleaded out to fines or stern admonishments? What percentage of the total number of (admittedly estimated) identity thieves does this represent?

I want information... INFORMATION! But I won't get it. At least not from this article.

And Network World is usually such a dependable read. [sigh]
