A couple of oldies but goodies

You left out one - 100BaseT vs 100VG
Maybe it only seems big to me because I was on the loosing side, But VG was first with 100Mbps products and with round robin access controlled by the switches, VG was deterministic. Unfortunately VG was only half-duplex and lost out in the long run to full duplex switched 100BaseT.

Actually TCNS (Thomas Conrad Networking System) was 100Mb before 100VG was. :)
But I'm just showing my age at this point... It was an interesting solution, but not really scalable in the grand scheme of things. But hey, when you need fast and that's the only thing around (remember, they were the kings of Arcnet), whaddya do?

IDS vs. IPS?? That is not an argument. These tools are not mutually exclusive but helpful in doing different tasks which should be done in conjuction with each other.
Apache vs. IIS is an argument (and a big one) that was obviously missed, however.
IDS vs IPS and Apache vs. IIS
Think our point here was that at the time IPS emerged, there was a debate about whether to go with that or IDS. As you say, the two have proven to be complementary and merged in some cases.
Excellent point on Apache vs. IIS. I smell a sequel to this story package...have started collecting ideas.

X.12 vs. UN/EDIFACT. As a cub technology reporter back in the day, I was amazed at the politics involved in EDI over these two formats - as in, an American industry group arguing against UN/EDIFACT specifications for defining shipping dates because the UN had defined it, and that was un-American!
