DSL is ATM, and most Frame rides ATM

Most DSL uses ATM framing - the user doesn't see it, because the interface to the user's PC is Ethernet or USB, but it's there, even if the ISP also adds a PPPoE layer on top of it, and it's often how the DSLAM provider (telco or CLEC) connects to the ISP. Most carrier frame relay networks carry the frame relay over ATM between switches, either using encapsulation or translation, and only use pure frame on the access lines. Most of the MPLS market also uses frame or ATM on the access lines, but it's starting to get pushed out by PPP and to some extent Ethernet as more scalable carrier switches are supporting those protocols.
On the other hand, ATM to the Desktop (and server) lost out to Ethernet years ago, though some routers still support LANE (as well as X.25, IPX, and other obsolete protocols.)
