You're free to handle your personal data however you want. However, I've found that backups get left out far too often already, and trusting yourself to carry media to other locations just means you'll back up even less often.
Many online backup systems allow you to encrypt the data on their servers so they can't read it anyway. If that's your only objection to offsite backup, a little research may ease your mind.
