YOUR top security-menace predictions for 2008

We want to hear from YOU! Share your predictions (and why) here.

If this year will be remembered for high-profile data breaches, with the TJX break-in topping a long list, then what troubles are in store for 2008?

Web threats one of the main security concerns for the IT industr

Symantec has made its key security predictions for 2008 and web threats are top of the list. It warns that trusted websites could be loaded up with malicious code which then attacks the unsuspecting visitor. As much as this is a threat to office networks it would be detrimental for industrial networks.

I can only agree with the Symantec prediction although it does not take into account the threat to industrial networks. We have seen viruses spread from the office network to the industrial manufacturing facilities many times. And if the number of infected sites increases so does the risk that employees accidentally download malware onto their computers. This means that in addition to the usual firewall companies need a ‘Defence in Depth’ security strategy. Innominate’s solutions such as the mGuard offer maximum security whilst at the same time allowing maintenance technicians to work flexibly at industrial sites.

Bluster and BS

Really, any time someone starts bleating on and on about how their product solves a problem my BS radar beacon goes off. BUSTED.

Threats are under your nose

These so-called top threat stories are laughable. It's not like there are legions of brand new threat actions laying in wait. Most IT managers don't even know how many IP addresses they have let alone identifying unknown threats. The problems are much simpler: lack of awareness as to internal control effectiveness; no way of policing policy; heavily invested in ad hoc support model to justify their existence and budgets. Executives and IT staffs ARE the biggest threats to most organizations. The menace is that people continue to deny it.
