Gross mistake in the article.
The Nortel Passport 8600 documentation states that devices running SMLT still use VRRP, which is not the case with Cisco VSS.
The Nortel docs refer to a "small enhancement in VRRP" that SMLT uses to overcome the active/passive design, but VRRP is still very much there.
Another difference between SMLT and VSS is that the latter appears as one device with one config file to the rest of the network.
