Cisco jumps to No. 2 position in enterprise telephony market

More good news for Cisco from Infonetics Research. The research firm said Cisco jumped from fifth to second position in the top 5 vendors that shipped the most enterprise telephony systems in 2007. In the market for PBX/KTS (key telephone system) equipment that topped $9.6 million in 2007, Cisco "was the only one of [the top 5 vendors] with a meaningful increase in market share," according to Infonetics. The vendors in order are: Avaya, Cisco, Nortel, Siemens, and Alcatel-Lucent. The market was buoyed by strong IP PBX systems equipment sales, and dragged down by TDM PBX/KTS, according to the research firm.

Earlier this week, Infonetics published its market figures for carrier router and switch sales, in which Cisco and Juniper led the pack.

Other highlights from the year in enterprise telephony include:

* Worldwide IP deskphone and softphone shipments are up 29% in 2007 from 2006
* Sales of TDM systems managed to stay above the $1 billion mark in 2007, likely for the last time.
* Hybrid IP PBX systems account for 2/3 of all lines shipped in 2007; pure IP systems account for 18%.
* The North American market had the weakest overall line growth in 2007; CALA had the strongest line growth, Asia Pacific the second strongest.
