There are a lot of good noises coming out of Microsoft at this point for the adoption of standards. The major projects they're undertaking and the acquisitions they're making are largely complimentary rather than competitive, which will make a better pie for everyone.
I'm optimistic that we won't have to wait too long. See Kim Cameron discussing M$ DreamSpark for an example:
