If you were oblivious to the fact that Cisco is touting the green card with its $200,000-plus TelePresence system you
should look no further than the John Chambers and Al Gore teleconferenced keynote at VoiceCon Wednesday, delivered by non other than Cisco's high-def videoconferencing setup. With Chambers at Cisco's TelePresence room in San Jose, and Gore in Nashville, Tenn., the two dicussed environmental issues in a discussion that was moderated by a journalist in London and hosted by Cisco Chief Marketing Officer Sue Bostrom at the convergence show in Orlando, Fla.
Chambers and Bostrom outlined Cisco's efforts to cut carbon emissions in the way it runs the company and also in the power consumption of its products. The company has what it calls the Eco Board, a group of employees charged with finding new ways to cut emissions. Chambers said the company cut its carbon footprint 20% and saved $150 million after it was challenged by the Clinton administration to do so, according to a story by Network World's Tim Greene, reporting from the show.
Gore gave TelePresence his seal of approval, saying: "I'm not a Cisco stockholder, but I wish I was," he said. He didn't mention iChat conferencing from Apple, on whose board Gore does sit.
