Insta-supercomputer

Purdue University’s IT staff (with some help from Indiana University staffers) unboxed and set up a new supercomputer dubbed Steele between breakfast and lunch on Monday. Jeez, it took me weeks get my Gateway home desktop computer up and running last year.

"The assembly was finished much faster than we expected, and by noon we were doing science," said Gerry McCartney, vice president for information technology and chief information officer, in a statement. "The staff was enthusiastic, the weather was great, and there were no problems installing the hardware or software."

The system consists of 812 Dell servers, 500 of which were up and running 1,400 research jobs by 1 p.m. Monday.

A time-lapse video of the supercomputer construction is available online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQxUCNfD_pc

Purdue's IT team easily beat its goal of getting the system up and running in 24 hours.
