You touched on a lot of things I did not know about the configuration architecture.
I feel the same way, we recently phased out our juniper routers and this is one thing about JUNOS I will surely miss.
Sure we have configuration management tools in place to easily roll back a config, but its not the same. There is still the time in between noticing the error, logging in to the management interface and deploying the last saved config.
