Broadband speeds
While there are always exceptions, it should be noted that most of the East Coast states have a much higher population density than their more western cousins. That of course means longer average loop lengths, and that in turn leads to slower average DSL connection speeds. This is also one of the reasons(not the only) why cities in Japan, Korea, etc. have higher typical broadband speeds than we do.
