"... a CMDB is not a 'thing' ..." No? Then why give it a name that distinctly implies a "thing"? Specifically, if it's not just about Configuration Management, then why the "CM"? And if it's not just about a Database, then why the "DB"?
As far as I can tell, what this is really all about is Master Data Management (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Data_Management) for the IT Service Management domain - and calling the kettle black would certainly help to eliminate a lot of the ongoing misconception.
