Open Networking Summit 2012 Day 1 Recap, part 2

The afternoon speakers on the opening day of ONS had a tall shadow cast from the excellent morning keynotes, but they did not disappoint, first showcasing the rapid and succesful growth and significant use cases for SDN, and then presenting some significant new developments both on SDN technologies and also showcasing new developments on how SDN can solve significant challenges with internet architecture and cloud computing.
Submitted by Art Fewell on Tue, 04/24/12 - 12:05am.

I would like to kick the afternoon summaries off with a prologue based on my notes and inspiration I took from day 1 of the summit.

Open Networking Summit 2012 Day 1 Recap, part 1.

The 2nd ever Open Networking Summit got started with a bang this week, selling out a forum that was double the capacity of the previous conference. SDN popularity is exploding and the presentations from this industry-leading event were worth their weight in gold. I am doing my best to capture the most salient points in summaries and my personal notes from all of the presentations.
Submitted by Art Fewell on Wed, 04/18/12 - 11:50pm.

Open networking summit (ONS) started off its 2nd conference this week. With the initial ONS conference only 6 months prior, it was noteworthy when ONS Chair Guru Parulkar reported that the Summit's new venue more than doubled the seating capacity, yet the venue still sold out with a growing waiting list.

Nicira peels back the curtain on the future of networking - Interview with Nicira CTO Martin Casado

Stealth networking startup Nicira Networks issued their first press release this week, I sat down with Nicira co-founder Martin Casado to discuss
Submitted by Art Fewell on Tue, 02/07/12 - 2:50pm.

Openflow and software-defined networking are being considered by many to be the architecture that will define the future of networking, and nobody is closer to the center of this technology movement than Nicira's Marin Casado, who is considered by many to be the father of OpenFlow. Nicira has been operating in stealth mode, but this week Nicira issued its first press release, providing insight into what it is that they have been up to.

Will the cloud take my job?

It's no secret that the cloud is coming and it's coming fast. Nearly every analyst has made aggressive predictions that outsourcing to the cloud will continue to grow rapidly. And while the cloud is now taking many jobs that used to go to internal IT, automation and self service capabilities of “private clouds” are taking many other jobs from IT with some vendors saying that automation can allow one administrator to manage as many as 30,000 servers. No doubt that these trends have some in IT fearing for their future, as evidenced by the recent flurry of popular IT articles about pursuing MBA degrees and gaining more business skills. I decided to take this path a few years back and have racked up 10’s of thousands in debt and countless hours on graduate school, and while this is important for some specialized roles, not everybody needs to go to grad school to accelerate their career even in these turbulent times. Working in IT doesn’t have to be scary, in fact I think today there is more opportunity to make your career more rewarding than ever, and there are many great ways to start advancing and protecting your career right now.

I remember the first SAAS application I helped deploy. It was great! One less application to worry about, and simple, fast installation. It meant an end to  frequent application updates and  late night service windows for IT. The SAAS provider even provided training, drove product usage, and handled support. What I didn't realize at the time, was that "as-a-service" wasn't only nice for the infrastructure teams, it also tempted the business side into thinking IT could be replaced.

OpenFlow, Merchant Silicon, and the Future of Networking

New trends promise to do for the networking industry what x86 and the PC clone did for the compute market. In contrast to the slim margins of the x86 market, leading network vendors make as much as 70 to 80% margin. And even with these tremendous margins, innovation in the network industry has paled in comparison to the x86 market. I say it's time for things to change.
Submitted by Art Fewell on Thu, 11/03/11 - 1:45pm.

2011 has been one of the most exciting years for networking I can remember.  Innovations made popular this year will prove to bring more value to enterprise networking consumers than anything in recent memory. Not only are we transitioning to cloud architectures and highly automated systems management, but new trends promise to do for the networking industry what x86 and the PC clone did for the compute market.

Open Networking Summit 2011 Day 3 Recap: Why current generation networks just aren’t cutting it

Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Verizon, and others gave numerous, concrete examples where limitations of current gen networking technologies are causing serious business and technology challenges. The common thread: They all see Software Defined Networking as the answer.

Open Networking Summit Day 2: Cisco says "We see SDN as the next evolution of networking"

Today several of the largest names in tech provided an iron-clad case for the future of SDN and OpenFlow
Submitted by Art Fewell on Wed, 10/19/11 - 5:36am.

I have to say that after an amazing Day 2 at the Open Networking Summit, I am convinced that OpenFlow and Software Defined Networking (SDN) are not only here to stay, but they will define the future of networking. I speak to a lot of enterprises about Software Defined Networking, and outside of the academic and development communities; it is still a new and somewhat unfamiliar term.

Is Cisco losing thought leadership in the networking industry?

A veritable who's who of tech industry titans are set to converge on Stanford next week for the cloud-led Open Networking summit highlighting the increasing influence of cloud providers, which is particularly notable as no networking manufacturers are in the leadership of the Open Networking Foundation. This begs the question, is Cisco losing influence in the networking industry?
Submitted by Art Fewell on Tue, 10/11/11 - 4:13pm.

If you work in networking, you've gotta have love for Cisco. Like most of us, I first learned about networking through Cisco, and attaining the CCIE certification would prove to be the basis for launching my career.  Cisco's brand in networking is analogous to what the brands Xerox and Polaroid were to their respective industries; like what IBM was to the mainframe and minicomputer industry.

OpenFlow inventor: Network provisioning will inevitably be automated

Martin Casado, inventor of OpenFlow and CTO of stealth startup Nicira, talks about the future of OpenFlow, networking and the job of the network engineer.
Submitted by Art Fewell on Thu, 09/08/11 - 3:15pm.

2011 has been an exciting year for Openflow and software defined networking (SDN). Continuing my informal series on Openflow, I recently got the chance to have a conversation with Nicira CTO Martin Casado to discuss the future of SDN generally and OpenFlow specifically.

The real 'investment protection' story of the Cisco 6500

Buyer beware: Upgrading could cost you more and kill performance.
Submitted by Art Fewell on Mon, 08/22/11 - 5:13pm.

As I am sure you all saw, Cisco recently announced the Supervisor 2T, extending the lifespan of the much loved platform. This continues Cisco's marketing message of investment protection around the 6500 ... the problem is, that the 'investment protection' story told here is simply false. The truth is that an upgrade to the Supervisor-2T in the manner described in Cisco's launch announcements would result in no bandwidth improvement and potentially over 7x performance reduction from the performance of the Supervisor 720 .
