You mention commercial products and open source products but you failed to mention probably the most ubiquitous product out there today. Namely, XP's remote desktop protocol (RDP). It works great and is widely used. I find this a glaring omission that I don't understand.

Remote Control
This wasn't a how-to on ways to connect remotely but a comparison of packaged products. Maybe I'll take a close look at XP for a column as a follow up.
