OSSEC does much more than just trigger alerts on failed logins or user additions. It has a very flexible and large set of rules that monitors everything from firewall logs, NIDSs, web server logs, mail logs, etc.
It also perform registry monitoring on Windows and allows real time remediations based on these events (like blocking an IP in the firewall or disabling an user account).
