Obviously those guys would have more information on their website (www.avici.com) but in substance what they are proposing is a control layer that operates on top of network equipment and provides connection and resource management capability through the control interfaces to the underlying devices, external policy management interfaces, etc. The service management and operations processes would connect to it in a generic way and thus the services would be more technology-independent.

In reading your piece on network control it occurred to me that many folks will wonder if this another attempt to restore the absolute monopoly of the re-emerging Bell system. I seem to recall the chairman of ATT pitching such an absurd notion not too long ago. After all, when one has had a god-given monopoly for 100 years it is hard to give it up!
