Vyatta joins ADTRAN as a victor over Cisco in the latest round of Tolly Group competitive labs tests.
Vyatta outperforms the Cisco 2821 router consistently in Layer 3 Ethernet bidirectional zero-loss throughput, achieving up to twice the performance at half the price. Vyatta operates at wire-speed across two onboard Gigabit Ethernet ports when forwarding 1,024-byte frames or higher. Vyatta delivers lower frame-loss than the Cisco 2821 for all packet sizes and achieves zero frame loss with packets of 1,024 bytes and higher. Vyatta leverages standard hardware and the structural cost benefits of the x86 ecosystem offer a flexible, extensive faster solution at attractive price points. |
"This report shatters the myth that proprietary hardware products are a better choice than standard x86-based systems for network infrastructure," said Dave Roberts, vice president of strategy and marketing at Vyatta.
"For the majority of routing applications, open-source software and x86-based hardware can easily address the performance requirements and at significantly lower price points." |

Tolly Group Lab Test:
ADTRAN NetVanta 3430 outperforms Cisco 1841/Cisco 2811 routers in Layer 3 Ethernet zero-loss throughput, achieving up to double the performance of competing devices tested with firewall and VPN enabled. The ADTRAN NetVanta 3430 router demonstrated ample processing headroom to handle security services while simultaneously offering wire-speed throughput for all packet sizes. In fact, the ADTRAN NetVanta 3430 delivered, on average, 86% greater throughput than the Cisco 1841, and 98% more throughput than the Cisco 2811 with both firewall and VPN services enabled. The combination of wire-speed throughput and toll-quality voice makes the NetVanta 3430 a strategic option for users deploying converged services networks that require the balance of performance and voice quality. When tested over a dual T1 scenario supporting multilink PPP, the NetVanta 3430 was the only device tested to return 100% of Layer 3 zero-loss throughput for the packet sizes tested. |
"I’m really not surprised by the performance of the NetVanta 3430 in the October and November 2006 Tolly Reports competitive performance Evaluations." noted Carl Dinarello, senior system engineer (certified ATSP internetworking) at Interlink Communication Systems, Inc. in Clearwater, Florida.
"The Tolly Reports speak for themselves in both comparision tests." "The net result is that the ADTRAN NetVanta products are superior to the competition." "One more quick observation is that the GUI is exceptional and for those who prefer the CLI, it is very comfortable and familiar.” |
