Re: Google's next frontier: Television

Comcast's CEO has long promised his company would be "the Google of television," so I don't know where that leaves Google. But I do know that countless companies and organizations want to be "the Google of" their particular domains. You can see the list here:

A linear channel might work because of Google's brand. They could hype the demand to get on cable and satellite channel line-ups via their online efforts.

But - - Current TV has beaten Google to the user-generated marketplace on channel line-ups.

I would look for the advertising play from them - - it's where they are already reaching out to newspapers (among other media) - - and they know it's where the money is.

It is great that Google is bringing attention to the industry but their approach is one that was tried repeately in the 1990's with no success. The future of TV advertising will look dramatically different than the Google / Echostar announcement. It will be a complete merging of the Internet with TV.
