I have long been a proponent of putting utilities underground. Yes, we all have a backhoe story to tell, I'm sure. But overall I think the threat scope and likelihood is much lower underground than above. What do you think?

Underbground utilities
The idea of putting everything underground is great for suburbia, but I would imagine is a little tougher in a city environment.
That said, this isn't the first time there's been a fire on the Longfellow. If I were Level 3, I'd route my cables under the more stable Mass Ave. bridge.
Underground Utilities to prevent disruption
I am also a proponent of underground utilities whenever it is reasonably feasable to do so, but in this case it would have not prevented the problem. Mainly because there is no way the cable owners are going to pay for underwater excavation - they could not "pass on" that kind of expense very easily and so ... they would still have to route cables over the bridges, etc. and hence still having to deal with similar problems. Might be a better idea to "harden" the above ground links as it would be much cheaper to do so.

Why not get rid of the homeless people? If the guy hadn't been smoking he wouldn't have lit the mattress on fire. Put the guy to work or relocate him.

Underground isn't always safe
There was a problem a few years back in upstate NY. The homeless had taken over some unused subway tunnels and started a fire to stay warm. The fire got out of control and by the time it was over, one of our primary carriers had lost a couple of OC3's. Unfortunately it hit them at a point where their redundant ring topology merged on its way back to their main switch. They were down for a couple days.
