If this kind of lunacy - people forming an iPhone line in New York - was already happening yesterday, one can only imagine the level of nuttiness that will build between now and Friday's launch.
Personally, I can wait.
(Update: Want to earn $200?)
However, twice in my life I have decided it was necessary to camp out on a street in order to gain first-in-line or near-first-in-line advantage over the masses.
The first was a Friday-through-Monday-morning stint spent in front of a bank back in the early ‘80s so that I could secure a government-sponsored, low-interest mortgage for first-time homebuyers. That stunt saved me tens of thousands of dollars over the ensuing years.
The second lineup was for something actually important: tickets to the 1975 World Series, which allowed me to be crouched behind the Red Sox dugout when Carl Yastrzemski hit that dramatic homerun in the 9th inning of Game 7 to give the Red Sox their first championship since 1918. (Hey, I was a freshman in college, the drinking age was 18, and that's the way I remember it.)
So, those are my stories. What's your favorite camped-out-in-line tale? Please share.
