Cisco equipment helps to balance WAN optimization with VoIP quality

WAN optimization is priority No. 1 at Nanometrics, maker of high-performance process control metrology systems used in semiconductor manufacturing, and it turned to its VoIP supplier Cisco to solve its network performance issues.

The problem was balancing WAN optimization with VoIP quality, particularly as Nanometrics was integrating with Accent Optical Technology, which it had acquired.

According to a story by Network World's Tim Greene:

Accent Optical was involved already in an extensive and cost-saving VoIP deployment; and Nanometrics, a maker of measuring tools for semiconductors, was testing WAN optimization gear to improve intercontinental WAN performance and save money as well. The two technologies weren’t playing well together, however, says Dave Kizer, director of IT for Nanometrics.

Kizer chose Cisco because of the integration between the Wide-Area Application Services (WAAS) modules and the router, When the router tags the VoIP traffic for priority, it can send the traffic on its way without it being queued up for the WAAS module, he says.

How much did Cisco pay to have this article put to press ?

Oh, please

0

If vendors actually paid us for story placement, we'd all be driving much nicer cars.

Have you no respect?

0

What an abrasive comment - have you no respect for the journalists who put together the story? How rude to assume that they would take a bribe for publishing or otherwise placing a story. That completely undermines the integrity of the author and the publication. Who do you work for?

Is this really a fair comparison?

0

In this example the WAE is off-path using WCCP so it will never see the VOIP traffic.

The Riverbed solution can sit off path but in this test is sat in-line.

Surely a fair comparison is to either have them both in-line or both off-path.

It wouldn't be a fair test

0

Riverbed's WCCP implementation doesn't even work, how would that make it a fair test?

It wouldn't be a fair test...

0

In-line it would have to be then.

We wouldn't want to disadvantage either vendor by trying to find a WCCP implementation on routers or switches that would work without any "bugs"...

Finding a WCCP version that works is easy.

0

WCCP works just fine. I've been using it for web caching for five years and been doing wan optimization using it for a year now. All of the recent IOS versions support it with no problem. And if you have a question on which version works, check with your Cisco SE. Do you work for Riverbed? I would assume so, because they made similar statements to "WCCP implementation on routers or switches that would work without any 'bugs'" and you're paying particular interest to this post.

undersized host box could be the issue they ran into....

0

In my experience, we have not seen the issue that Nanmetrics ran into. I could see how this can happen with an undersized Steelhead at the host site as the layer 2 queues on the Riverbed could get overrun if the Riverbed Steelhead appliance is being heavily taxed. I work for a Cisco partner and we are also partnered with Riverbed because at this point and time they seem to have the best technology for WAN optimization and application acceleration. We have been having great success with Riverbed's solution in our customer's environments. Just my $.02

Loftenter - what are you talking about

0

There is no such thing as a "layer 2 queue" - do you have any idea what you're talking about?

Cisco does not have Application Prioritization

0

I can tell you that one of the only companies I have found that can provide QOS for Application prioritization is Streamcore or Impaname, both will provide the ability to prioritize the VOIP or SAP or Oracle so that under any condition, when congestion is present the VOIP will get network resource and the congestion will be throttled down, to business priorities the way it should be. Streamcore actually offers a feature where a portal into the manager is accessed for changing the priorities in real-time so at the end of quarter you can change priorities as the business needs change. Riverbed has good caching functionality but can't do the QOS like these other guys.
