I'm not a geek by any means but even I secured my home network. A coffee shop or cafe can do the same and provide a key to their customers on their receipt. They can even change it daily if they want. I wouldn't use the unlocked car analogy, but it's similar to having people cut corners across your yard if there's no fence. Or listening to your stereo if you don't close your windows.
