What's so new about Cisco's new data center?

Cisco's big announcement at Networkers this year is its so-called Data Center 3.0, which focuses on virtualization and IT automation.

It will take Cisco two years to flesh out Data Center 3.0 and it began the process today by rolling out a raft of products - see the details in this story by Network World's Jim Duffy. Call me a wizened hack, but what is new in this announcement that we haven't heard already from HP, IBM, heck, even Sun and Microsoft? How significant is this? Will you be buying into Cisco Data Center 3.0?

I'll be interested to see data center guru and current Author Expert blogger Doug Alger's take on Data Center 3.0.

Cisco DC 3.0

I think Cisco has been going down the right road all along. It wasn't that long ago that they had NO presence in the DC space - then along came the MDS series of SAN switches offering features unheard of before. The difference between Cisco's approach and that of other vendors appears to be the scope of their vision. They seem to see the big picture nirvana that we are all looking for and are moving steadily in the direction of fulfilling that need/desire.

Will customers jump on Cisco DC 3.0? I certainly think the visionaries will.... and the others will likely be going "me too!" after they see the success of the early adopters.

Cisco's only challenge at this point is to put together the right nuts and bolts to bring their total vision into reality. But history shows they've been very good at doing that in the past..... we'll see.
