Survey: Cisco elevated to strategic security vendor status

Cisco or Microsoft were cited by IT executives polled by Nemertes Research as their "strategic security vendor," according to a story by Network World's Ellen Messmer.

The in-depth interviews of 50 executives found that 42.6% of respondents had a strategic vendor that is defined as one an IT exec would turn to first as a perferred security partner. Cisco was mentioned about 20% of the time and Microsoft about 10%. IBM and Symantec weren't even mentioned.

According to the story:

The results are a remarkable turnaround for Cisco and Microsoft compared with the responses from 2005, when IT executives were asked the same question. At that time, there was little indication anyone had a strategic security vendor — but the question often incited grumbling and disparaging comments about Microsoft and Cisco, says Nemertes president Johna Till Johnson. “It’s a 180-degree turnaround for them in perception." Juniper came out tops in respondents' ratings of customer service, support, and strength of technology and value.
