A competitor to Cisco has appeared in the IP routing scene. Anagran is founded by one of the "fathers" of the Internet, Larry Roberts, one of the developers of the ARPANET network that evolved into the Internet. The Anagram Anagran FR-1000 Flow Router is a one-rack unit designed to improve the performance of IP-based video, voice, data and wireless applications with lower cost and energy consumption than today’s Layer 3 routers. Despite the pedigree of the founder, squeezing a dime out of the router market in competition with Cisco and Juniper is going to be tough, according to Om Malik, commenting in GigaOm.
Several have failed, and others have had to embrace equally large players like Alcatel-Lucent to earn a living.
