The past 7 days on Cisco Subnet: VPN, IOS security warnings

Cisco security issues were in the news this week, with Cisco warning of two flaws in its VPN Client for Windows that could allow unprivileged users to elevate their privileges to those of LocalSystem account. Separately, Heise Security Friday warned of a denial-of-service vulnerability in IOS that could be exploited to reboot routers at ISPs. At the time of writing, Cisco has yet to release details of the problem. Some ISPs implemented their own workarounds, reports Heise.

Cisco moves deeper into the virtual world 

Cisco launched its Virtual World blog Wednesday and immediately, bloggers were speculating who Cisco is looking to buy to boost its virtual efforts. The ReBang blog is speculating that the network giant could be eyeing up Qwaq, a provider of "virtual spaces for real work" to complement its WebEx buy.

Aruba puts the squeeze on Cisco

An InformationWeek story cited several examples of the now-public Aruba winning wireless LAN customers from Cisco. Apparently the battle between the two wireless players will heat up with the adoption of the 802.11n standard. Cisco Subnet readers are split on whether Aruba is just a flash in the pan or has better products.

Cisco China's grows it own

Cisco in Hong Kong recorded steller second-half sales that increased 35% over the year-ago figure, but Cisco in China, like its fellow hi-tech firms in that country, suffer from a lack of experienced managers. Businessweek reports of Cisco's "management kindergarten" aimed to nurturing managers from within.

The clash of the titans
