Cisco Self-Defending Network still a work-in-progress

There's still work left to be done with Cisco's Self-Defending Network, Cisco's 6-year-old strategy for securing converged networks, reports Network World's Jim Duffy.

Cisco's aim with SDN is to integrate security into all aspects of a converged data, voice and video network with a focus on secure connectivity, threat defense, and trust and identity management. Its most recent update to the strategy was its acquisition of IronPort, a developer of e-mail and Web security products.

According to the story, Cisco customers and industry analyst want to see the following from Cisco's SDN strategy:

* Some insight into IronPort's data-leakage preventage capabilities, which appear to be missing.

* Take SDN into the realm of virtualization, especially with intrusion detection.

* Hear about other technologies to combat security threats, such as IPs, behavioral technology, and risk assessment.

* How it deals with Web 2.0 in the enterprise.

Sure, Cisco would have everyone believe that if you buy all their crap the network will virtually run and secure itself...In reality, the small print on the bottom of their marketing literature, it reads: "every network administrator should follow best practices in security management. Regularly monitor traffic, enforce policy and educate users." No freaking network gear can defend itself...GET REAL!
People that buy this line of BS are being exploited on a regular basis. Ironic.

The fact that NW continues to promote this Cisco' marketitecture is because they pay big dollars for advertising.
