NFS (Network File System)

A system, developed by Sun to allow file sharing across a network.

Using the Transport Independent RPC protocol as its underlying communications protocol, NFS lets clients read and write remote files as if they were stored on a local hard drive.

Originally developed for Unix systems, it has been extended to run on and with other network and desktop operating systems. NFSv4 adds security and file locking and enhanced Windows support.

Compare to CIFS.
