Cisco furthers home-networking ambitions with China's Haier

Cisco has struck a deal with Haier, China's largest manufacturer of large home appliances that will allow the two companies to exchange knowledge of the home networking and other consumer-related markets.

The deal follows news that Cisco is in discussions with the Shanghai government to build a wireless broadband "Mega City" in time for the 2010 World Expo (see this blog entry).

Cisco and Haier will share best practices in areas such as investments and financial management and controls, Cisco said in a news release.

The two companies will work together on a "broad range" of projects in China and other markets outside the U.S., Cisco said.

It's interesting that Cisco is teaming up with Haier, the fourth-largest "white-goods" manufacturer worldwide. Haier is looking to expand its brand outside China and no doubt will find lots of advice from Cisco. What advice can it give Cisco? This could be a the first in a line of similar deals Cisco will strike with other home appliance companies wanting to expand into the home networking space. Cisco and GE, perhaps?
