The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 09/27/07

GOOD: Go Phish

Scientists at Carnegie Mellon University have developed an online game designed to teach Internet users about the dangers of phishing. Officials with CMU's Privacy and Security Lab say users who spent 15 minutes playing the online game -- which features a cartoon fish named Phil -- were better able to discern fraudulent Web sites than those who simply read tutorials about the threat.

BAD: Apple is warning you

Sister publication MacWorld reports that: "Apple has been very quiet on the topic of unlocking the iPhone, which allows it to work with other wireless carriers. However, the company [has] issued a stern warning to users that their iPhone may be permanently inoperable if they use the various unlocking software available on the Internet."

UGLY: Disaster recovery and parachutes

Gil Hecht, CEO of Continuity Software, says that this is the dirty little secret of the $44 billion disaster recovery business:"Ask someone responsible for disaster recovery or storage if they think their setup will work for real. They'll answer 'no.' It's like having a parachute that won't open."
