Why Record Skype?

By James Gaskin on Fri, 09/28/07 - 11:18am.

As this article says, new products arrive regularly to record Skype calls. The question for most people is why anyone, outside of the NSA, wants to record phone calls?

The answer comes from the fact many companies are now using Skype for their teleconferencing needs. Special phones (like this and this) from manufacturers support PC connections for Skype calls, seeking to become the Polycom starfish phone of choice for Skype calls. And Polycom has their own options as well.

Since few teleconferences include everyone who needs to hear the information on the actual call, an easy way to record those calls makes that information available for later listening. Keeping audio recordings of calls also eliminates those "my notes versus your notes" arguments that often erupt in meetings about previous meetings.

You can use one of many Skype-to-regular-phone adapters, but then you lose one of the best advantages of Skype for teleconferencing: the wider frequency range provided by Skype. Phones built for Skype support much lower and higher frequencies than the traditional telephone network can transmit (early equipment limitations and expense limited the Bell System to about 300-3000Hz). Using a regular teleconference phone with a Skype adapter cuts off the extra frequencies Skype transmits.
