"In Europe we will be short of half a million people skilled in networking. Cisco is aiming to address this gap because it doesn’t matter if we release a new product every day; if there is no one there to implement it to the end user, then it doesn’t make much sense," said Thierry Drilhon - vice president of European channels at Cisco. |

skill shortage for CISCO products !!??
I do not beleave there is so much CISCO networking skill shortage. In fact, there are a lot of former (like me) CISCO NETACAD students who have finished CCNA1-CCNA4 training with success and did not pass the exam because it is too expensive for any person who lose his former I.T. job following the last restrucuration of its former employer.
The exams are too expensive because I had to reach about 90 % to receive the certificate which is only valid a few 2 or 3 years, and then... what to do if you reach 'only' 84 % and or do not find a related job in a few months ? You have to restart from zero.
So, as a former netacad student, I HAD TO TAKE ANOTHER JOB as a developper.
Why... why... why...
Glad to see someone is discussing this issue...
Whether or not there is a Cisco (or telecom in general) skills shortage here in the U.S. is a big question. On one hand, if you are an employer and post on a job site like Monster.com looking for Cisco engineers you would probably get 5,000 responses to it. That makes it very difficult for employers to figure out who is for real in this pool and who is either exaggerating or fibbing on their resumes. It also makes it very hard for qualified people to bubble to the top of this huge pool of job-seekers. On the other hand, anyone who works in the industry will tell you that it isn't easy to find people who actually have good, hands-on telecom experience and have good job and people skills.
The reasons for this? For one, Cisco and MS have been handing out certifications such as MSCE and CCNA like candy over the past decade (how many of these certs have been obtained fraudlently is a big question raised before in this venue). Also, lying/exaggerating on resumes has almost become the rule in this industry.
What do others think?
Chris.
Cisco HR incompetence
Had a very discouraging experience with Cisco HR today in which am now starting to believe:
"Cisco does not suffer from a shortage of 500,000 skilled network engineers, but rather Cisco is suffering from a shortage of 5 competent recruiters."

Brad Reese
