RE: Is satellite undergoing a renaissance?

Verizon Business already offers a satellite service that is tied directly into our network backbone. The service is called Private IP Satellite. Specific information can be found at www.verizonbusiness.com/us/internet/satellite/compare.xml and www.verizonbusiness.com/us/resources/data/privateipsat.pdf

Dear Anonymous -

Could you contact me with the PR and/or marketing contact for your private IP satellite service? I asked the folks I interviewed specifically about all this, and they remained mum about this other service. I'd like to clear things up. I can be reached at .

Thank you. -- Joanie

Clarifying VZB's satellite offerings

The existing Private IP service from VZB is intended as a "fixed" last-mile alternative to terrestrial circuits. It involves use of a fixed terminal or one that is somewhat "portable" from one building site to another, but it weighs about 200 pounds.

The Thrane & Thrane service, by contrast, is intended to accommodate individual mobile workers and uses very small portable terminals that people can carry around. Today, if users have IPSec software and IPSec VPN termination capabilities at their own sites, they can get to their corporate resources via IPSec VPN over the public Internet. When Verizon Business collocates its MPLS PE routers with T&T downlink base stations, users will be able to use their MPLS VPN backbone services, rather than the Internet, for corporate access.
