Microsoft to buy Musiwave

Microsoft today announced that it intends to acquire Musiwave SA, a provider of mobile music entertainment services to operators and media companies. Musiwave's software allows device users to download ringtones and music tracks onto a variety of devices. Musiwave is based in Paris and is currently owned by Openwave Systems, a company that has been struggling financially, according to published reports. With this purchase, Microsoft gains Musiwave's relationships with music labels, device makers and mobile operators in that deliver digital entertainment to consumers. Microsoft says that it intends to meld Musiwave's technology and business partnerships into Microsoft's Connected Entertainment technologies and services, which includes Windows Mobile, Zune, MSN and Windows Live.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
