RE: Encryption key to next-gen slot machines

From my own experience (22 years of it) in the gaming industry in Nevada, this technology may be foolproof as far as encryption standards go ... but the Nevada Gaming Commision approval could still be a very long time in coming! We have been regulating these kinds of things for many, many years and have found that if a man can design it ... another man can ALWAYS figure out how to beat it, or use it for an unfair advantage. NOT having bi-directional communications between machines or server farms and making each game a stand alone highly regulated and controlled unit, is one sure way to limit the damage a determined gaming cheat can do. FYI - gaming cheats are NOT always outside of the casino infrastructure either! The 'already in place' security for the manufacture, reproduction and replacement of the 'stand alone' EPROMS IS very much tighter than Nuclear Security coding was when I dealt in that field in the military before geting into gaming. The only benefit I can see to server farm control of the games is to defeat the laws in Nevada and elsewhere that regulate how much of each dollar taken in - is actually returned to the players - a highly regulated percentage,by Nevada law. It just would appear to be too dangerous to allow 'controllers' to change games or the processing 'on the fly' - without the stringent regualtory controls now in place. I just don't see that happening any time soon. More technology is NOT always a good thing for the general public. I am sure there are many more places this tech could be used, but hopefully not in the gaming industry.

One early usage is for a way to change which game is on the box without sending the tech to change all of the graphics and eprom.

There is a server which has a copy of all of the "approved" games. Then the casino can "push" the game on the machines without having to send a tech out to replace the E-Prom. This will include all of the graphics and buttons.

The gaming board would still have to approve the games.

This is from a friend of mine who works in R&D in Aristrocrat Gaming.
