Top 6 Cisco acquisitions of 2007; what it should buy in 2008

Cisco made 11 acquisitions this year culminating in 126 purchases since Cisco's birth. It made three more acquisitions than it did last year, when it spent a measly $256 million buying ho-hum technologies. This year was different, not only in the sheer dollar size of some acquisitions, but also because of the breadth of technologies it acquired. From social networks to broadband wireless, we take a look at what Cisco Subnet has named Cisco's top-six acquisitions of 2007. We also look at what Cisco should have bought and what Cisco may be looking to buy in 2008.

One Company that may be on the list next year is OPNET. Cisco currently resells the OPNET suite of network troubleshooting products to its customer base. It would seem illogical to think that when their OEM agreement expires that Cisco will simply give those customers back to OPNET and exit the partnership.

network troubleshooting is a boring segment to spent $M on. OEM the tools and wait for someone to build something better to OEM. OpNet's products are old, antiquated tools and certainly not something that Cisco needs to buy.

Opnet Antiquated? Last time I checked, early 2007, they had the best of breed product for network application analysis and there was hardly any competitors that would come even 1/2 way close. Is there somebody else I should know about? The only problem I had with Opnet is they wanted some 40K-80K for software when my company would barely be able to justify 10K for it.

OPNET is too Micromanaged to sell. They would never make the transition to the Cisco way of doing business.
