RE: How we tested UTM firewalls

I've combed thru the content and can't seem to find how many interfaces Joel used to max out the test bed for the IBM and Juniper numbers...2.8 over four as opposed to 2.8 over six or eight is a big deal...

Four interfaces

My apologies for the lack of clarity. I used four interfaces. Because we were re-using the topology from the UTM testbed, the firewalls had 1 interface with many VLANs on it, and 3 other dedicated interfaces. We used one of the VLANs, and the three other dedicated interfaces.

The firewalls were also in operating HA pairs, with logging, dynamic routing, NAT, etc., all turned on, but no A/V or IPS features aside from those included in the basic packet filter (or proxy, as the case may be) that came with the firewall.

In theory, we could have gone up to 4-ish Gigabits (minus the usual overhead), but the gear that I had available to me could only hit the 2.8 mark.

Try this one, great value

Great article, I came across a new UTM manufacturer that offers the best of both worlds.
All applications are included in the hardware cost and their are zero ongoing subscriptions as they utilize snort, clam and spam assassin in combination with their own technologies. I bought mine on a "try and buy" and found the spam to be superior to my email gateway. O2 Security is the company, I purchased their U100.
