RE: Microsoft security update cripples IE

Oops. Microsoft's patch for IE has crippled some users' ability to get on the Web with the browser, according to a report by Computerworld. According to the site: "Users started posting messages to multiple Microsoft support newsgroups almost immediately after Microsoft released the MS07-069 security bulletin on Dec. 11, saying that they were unable to connect to the Internet, either because IE refused to open or because when it did open, it could not reach various sites."

Microsoft said it is on the case. "Our customer service and support teams are investigating public claims of a deployment issue with Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-069," Microsoft's Mark Miller, director of security response, acknowledged to Computerworld in an e-mail. It's no fun having to stop your staff from loading updates, is it?

I guess it got me too.

I had the same issue with IE6 and XP. In my case, when I went to certain web pages the browser would ask me if I wanted to debug an exception with Visual Studio. When I said "no", IE just closed.

I thought it might have been an interaction with Macafee, since I also just installed that, but I guess its unrelated.

My solution was to put on IE7 for XP, after which I had no issues, but I would have preferred to stick with IE6.

IE Update

I do not have many IE6 installations around but when the patch that affected IE6 was released I found out just how many install's I had. Not only on the network (there were 3) but users at home who had not upgraded IE6 to 7. They did not complain to Microsoft, they complained to me. Maybe that is why there was not many complaints to Microsoft about this issue - there was only me scrambling to find a fix for the Explorer that suddenly would not Explore anymore.

This is all true... I have

This is all true... I have XP Pro with IE7 and many IE apps would stall. Going to a link within a web page would half-way load. I would have to minimize the previous page in order for the link to open. Yes, in some cases, IE7 would say " sorry.. error.. IE must close". Other cases I would totally loose all IE7 applications. I would reopen IE7 and loose my Google tool bar.... I did have SP3 installed and just recently 'removed' it and only downloaded the necessary updates that this computer needed. So far those issues have not reappeared. some of these issues get quite old... Do they really think we all need to continue with more of the same with a new OP system...? Has Microsoft considered going to a small open source OP system??? ..others work well....
