Cisco's Giancarlo resigns - what now?

We thought the speculation was dead wrong. Why would Charlie Giancarlo, Cisco CEO heir-apparent and Cisco chief development officer want to leave Cisco after being given the task of overseeing Cisco's newly revamped development office? On Thursday, Cisco announced that Giancarlo had resigned and would be joining private equity firm Silver Lake as a managing director effective Jan. 1 (see Network World Jim Duffy's story). He will be replaced by a council of product development executives formed by Cisco earlier this month as part of a restructuring of Giancarlo's Cisco Development Office. What does this mean for Cisco? Does this make way for a bigger role for new Cisco CTO, Padmasree Warrior, who was recently CTO at struggling Motorola. Now that the old guard are disappearing from Cisco (note the departure of former star Cisco exec Mike Volpi in February) does this signal the departure of John Chambers in the near future? What do you think?

Charlie

Charlie most likely left because John will stay at Cisco as the CEO/Chairman. While being heir-apparent is nice, its not being the king. And if the heir has to wiat 5+ years for the throne sometimes they go take over another country....

Stagnation

Some things are meant to be. Cisco is suffering from stagnent leadership and needs fresh minds to come in and add innovatation like Apple and Google are doing. Charlie while and asset is stagnated at Cisco. He needs a place where ge can make a difference...Microsoft?

Microsoft for Charlie

Why does your feeble lil Cisco tainted brain think that Charlie could make a difference at Microsoft?

He made hay while the sun was shining at Cisco (right place right time) He knows nothing about how to effect change at a place like Microsoft.

Cisco needs a replacement for Chambers from a Sales leader, not a tech leader.
