NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sony BMG Music Entertainment, the world's second largest music company, will this month become the last of the big four majors to drop copy protection software on music downloads, also known as digital rights management (DRM).
OOops. CD sales fell 15% last year and digital music sales didn't take up the slack. Steve Jobs lead the parade -- he felt DRM was a barrier and took it down. Seems everyone is getting in line with him. Whither goest thou, Vista?

Just hope they won't try to
Just hope they won't try to call it something else... Anyway, the damages are done; I don't trust buying music online with or without DRM just in case I get get a DRM kind of thing on it.
I keep buyng DVD, I know they will work the day I have to move to Linux for some reasons; at least I keep the door open. I know my DVD's will work everywhere which isn't the case with Blue-ray and HD-DVD.

Digital Rights Management may come back with a new spin -- DRM2, perhaps -- but that's not the model I see in play. Looks to me like music is going to end up with a 'smart card' approach.

If you want to get their attention don't buy their products, wait until they come down to $5.00. Now that will change their out look in a hurry! You don't have to buy any thing right now wait, you have the time. The large company's can't continue to make their payrolls with no income. The time is against them not you. They have to turn a profit you don't have to help them. You have the power don't give it to them. I like the new movies and music also. I refuse to make their payroll for them, I wait until the price come down to $5.00 or $7.00, then buy saves me money and costs them money if every one did that you would see a drastic change of their attitude.

You're mixing consumer goods in here now. I was talking about computer OSes.
Using your argument, you would still be running DOS on... what? The new hardware won't run DOS. The newest software is often not compatible with Windows 95/98/ME or NT/2000 -- you are FORCED to run XP or Vista if you are going to play The Micro$oft Game.
But, to extend your argument, we don't HAVE to play that game. We could seek Linux solutions, and I think we should. The Linux codecs play .mp3 files just fine and don't include DRM.
