Expedia issues statement on the issue

Katie Deines, senior manager corporate communications at Expedia, has provided this statement on behalf of Expedia to explain what occurred (see story):

"Earlier this week we discovered a banner ad on our network from an imposter advertiser who was able to circumvent Expedia's advertising policy in order to serve an intrusive pop-up window. In accordance with our advertising operations policy, we ceased delivery of the ad immediately upon discovering it. Expedia has strict media guidelines in place to protect our network against malicious advertising. In addition, we employ a number of practices to test ads on our network and identify any problematic campaigns, which is how we discovered the offending campaign ealier this week. We're constantly evaluating our security practices and procedures to address the newest threats.

This is an industry-wide issue, with criminal organizations targeting many responsible and prominent media sites and reputable online brands. These organizations utilize increasingly insidious tactics to obfuscate the intended behavior of their ads, making it difficult for media providers to identify malicious campaigns."

malicious coding to smear someone's name

0

Here's one: someone who's computer savvy wants to ruin someone's reputation so codes their name into websites that when the person is searched, hard core porn or malicious viruses/spyware/adware will download and infect their computer when the searcher opens the link. What can one do about this and who can they report this to - especially if you think you know who it is?
