RE: LANDesk wins client management shootout

Yes it does, but the cost for LANDesk is prohibitive. We would love to have LANDesk but we are a University so LANDesk is out of our reach.

When you compare systems management products you need to factor in the setup, initial cost, price per seat, and annual maintenance.

I know that a Cadilac is better than my Chevy but I also know I can't afford it.
LANDesk's higher-ed pricing is ridiculous.

While having to write some of our own FixLets we are using BigFix with a great deal of success. I just wish BigFix would build in Intel's AMT 3.0 technology so that we could go from bare metal.

KBOX??

We've been using the KBOX 1000 and 2000 for years. We chose them based on ease of deployment, ease of use, and top-notch support.
I'm not convinced the reviewer gave the KBOX as fair a review as he might have been able to. With KBOX- you don't have to spend tons of time preparing your environment to be managed- it just works, right out of the box.

I hope you admins out there give all vendors equal time- not based on this review. Talk to real customers, not technical review editors.

KBOX works!

I have to agree with Chris Blake concerning this review. We have both KBOX appliances and I am not kidding when I say the worked right out of the box (no pun intended). It appears the reviewers were unfamiliar with an appliance based management system and didn't explore the functionality completely. My engineers converted us over from multiple software based systems that were at their best, clunky. Now those systems are consolidated and simple to use.

Jim, I'm glad the KBox devices are working well for you (and Chris). Yes, we're quite familiar with using network appliances to handle a wide variety of network administration tasks. Some people love appliances. Others don't, for various reasons. As an example, appliances are sometimes not as scalable as the buy-the-software-and-choose-the-right-sized-server-to-run-it-on approach.

KBOX is a cheap knock off of LANDesk

KBOX is horrible can't believe someone would even say that they are in the same category of LANDesk.

Yes, Chris, the KBox units do work "right out of the box." However, installation happens just once. The worth of a tool is in its ongoing use to manage desktop clients. The KBox units, despite all the tasks they did well, were not LANDesk's equal.

Dartmouth College has been

Dartmouth College has been using LANDesk for several years now and we absolutely love the product. While I agree there is a premium for this amazing product it is a well deserved premium and is not excessive. I love to go on the cheap... heck we would love to have the product be free... But the reality is you get what you pay for. We have found the product, and support to be exemplary and the savings are more than any price we have paid. Now does that mean I would not love lower prices? No. There are things in the product we cannot afford like the virtual application technology that is well in just one word wow... And can we afford it no. But hey if I knock loud enough on LANDesk’s door for long enough you never know what is going to happen... I understand in the EDU world we don’t have tons of money so I get what I can but what I do want is something that works, and pays for itself immediately.. And with LANDesk that is what we received. The support is stellar, if you give them change requests for the product they get implemented... I cannot say any less forcefully that I would leave my job if we could not have LANDesk. To the poster above you should contact a different DVAR and or LANDesk directly and tell them you need better pricing... They will work with you to bring the price down... Call them every month till you can get it... it’s worth it...

I too feel that the writers

I too feel that the writers did not get into everything KBOX has to offer. I came from a Landesk background and I am Landesk certified. It is a great tool but it is expensive. KBOX was our replacement and it has been great. We have had more success with package installs, inventory management and client reporting than we ever had with Landesk. KBOX does support remote control and we use it daily in our enviroment. To have it setup in our enviroment took less than an hour. With the newest releases things have become even easier.
