Microsoft buys 3D tool maker Caligari

Yet another purchase by Microsoft -- a 3D tool vendor to improve its Virtual Earth mapping application (which is already a pretty good tool, especially when using it in Internet Explorer.) In this case Microsoft has bought Caligari, a developer of 3D modeling software who has been in that business for ages (since the day's when the Amiga was the to-die-for PC among gamers). This is the second acquisition Microsoft has made in order to grab technology for Virtual Earth. In December, Microsoft bought online mapping services company Multimap.

Virtual Earth's beta 3D rendering, where the map can be manipulated to show profile views at any angle, is downright awesome. Whatever the plans Microsoft has for Caligari should prove to be even more cool ways to use online mapping services.
