Phishers are at it again with another round of IRS tax refund messages. Already got three of these today with a subject line of Tax Notification:

Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
United States Department of the Treasury

After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of $184.80.

Please submit the tax refund request and allow us
6-9 days in order to process it.

A refund can be delayed for a variety of reasons.
For example submitting invalid records or applying after the deadline.

To access the form for your tax refund, use the following personalized link:

[URL DELETED]

Regards,
Internal Revenue Service

Document Reference: (DELETED).

The URL referenced in the message has the standard IRS address appended to it, but uses hexadecimal characters to hide the true destination. The same string is used as the "Document Reference number." In my case, the phishers had good timing since I just filed my taxes over the weekend. I am sure many who are not as security savvy are in the same boat and might be lured into clicking this link. Hopefully, the phishing site is already down (I didn't dare check.)

I am sure there will be more like this, particularly as we get closer to the tax deadline in April and as the government starts rolling out the tax rebate checks in May and June.

As always, be wary.
