Aerosmith gets its own Guitar Hero game

Aerosmith becomes video game guitar heroesVideo games built around rock bands haven't done so well (Journey: Escape anyone?), but I don't think this will be the case with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, which combines a great rock band with a great video game.

The game, slated for a June release, puts players in the shoes of guitarists Joe Perry, Brad Wihtford and Tom Hamilton, as they rock along with frontman Steven Tyler and drummer Joey Kramer.

Players will get to progress through the Aerosmith "career" by playing songs from Aerosmith, but also songs from "celebrated artists that the band has either performed with or has been inspired by in some way." Venues from historical moments in the band's career will also be created in the game.

The best news – Activision is allowing Guitar Hero III owners to download a free song, Aerosmith's "Dream On," to play on their game. The song is available for free from Feb. 16 through 18 on the Xbox Live Marketplace for the Xbox 360 system, as well as the Playstation Store for the Sony PS3. If you own the game already, be sure to grab the free song download.

This is great news, and hopefully this will get us down the road of further bands signing up for the games, as well as the possibility that players could take existing MP3 song files that they own and jam out in the video game to that song. Because I don't really see a day when Activision comes out with "Guitar Hero: Dexy's Midnight Runners" edition.
