Applause to Patrick Durasau for attempting to bring some sense to the Office Open XML/ODF mess. With Microsoft just days away from
another critical vote that could help OOXML get accepted as an ISO standard, enough is enough with the standards community infighting. The open letter written by Durasau, involved with the ODF side, makes a lot of sense, calling for both formats to be developed in parallel. The fact that Duasau opted to write his letter in neither format – using PDF instead – is a funny twist to the whole debacle.
"Peaceful co-evolution will mean better standards at lower costs in a more timely fashion," he said. Right-on to that.

Problem
The opinion is mislead as no one prevents these parties to develop their specifications. But if you want it to become an ISO standard than you need to play according to the rules.
