Former Cisco CCIE busted for committing $1,982,926.00 SMARTnet fraud

U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of Ohio

Greg WhiteGreg White - United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, announced the bust of former Cisco CCIE - Kent S. Andrews for committing $1,982,926.00 in SMARTnet fraud.

The fact that Andrews was previously a Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert, the highest level of Cisco certification, is a blow to the prestige and respectability of the high standards maintained and revered within the CCIE community.

Cisco SMARTnet Advance ReplacementAndrews devised and executed a scheme to defraud Cisco by submitting fraudulent service claims under the Advance Hardware Replacement program of his Cisco SMARTnet service contracts.

Under this program, Cisco customers are able to obtain replacement parts for failed or defective parts without first returning the defective part, but must return the defective parts within 30 days.

Between December 2003 and May 2006, Andrews submitted fraudulent service claims for approximately 241 Cisco computer networking parts valued at $1,982,926.00, despite the fact that Andrews did not possess the claimed defective parts, and was not otherwise entitled to submit claims for the parts under the SMARTnet program.

After fraudulently obtaining the parts from Cisco, Andrews sold the equipment to unsuspecting buyers, including individuals who placed bids on E-Bay auctions where Andrews offered many of the fraudulently obtained parts for sale.

Individuals and companies involved in Cisco SMARTnet fraud who wish to turn themselves in or cooperate with law enforcement should contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation at 408-369-8900.

How do I feel about a CCIE committing an ethics violation?

Gosh, CISCO lies and says they created routing.

Why should we expect anything better from one of their CCIEs?

What an idiotic remark...
I suppose if he drove a Chevrolet, then somehow the GM Corporation should look bad ?

This criminal's activities had nothing to do with the reputation (and market share) Cisco has earned.

"Bravo" to the prosecutor who busted him
(with Cisco's full support & help).

CCIE means you're supposed to be good at networking. Doesn't have anything to do with how honest you are. People are still people.

Over and over againg we are seing this.
The big question is - How does Cisco let it get to this level " over and over again"
This tells me one thing - Cisco has some serious internal problems with there smartnet program tracking equipment ! 241 cases of replacement parts and NO RED FLAGS ??? How do they ship over and over with no red flags or any kind of stop gaps in place ?
I think we have seen at least 5 or more of these in the news in the last 6-12 months, How many more of these cases are there? If I do the math on the cases in the press on this in the past year Cisco has shipped 25+ million in fradulent smartnet equioment out to the open market. If I were a major stockholder I'd be looking for some accountability inside the Cisco walls !
SHAME ON YOU CISCO.

Someone inside Cisco should be held accountable for this starting at the highest level !

JC and crew dont have a clue how to capitolize in the secondary market.

There were red flags

What do you mean no red flags? No tracking? Cisco called the FBI!!! Something must have tipped them off to a problem.
