Rather Fight Than Switch: Vista SP1 or XP SP3

If you are a Microsoft TechNet subscriber, you don't have to wait until March to get the Windows Vista SP1 update. Simply visit the TechNet Plus Subscriptions section of TechNet to download Vista SP1.

You will have to uninstall previous Vista SP1 betas and might be one of those who have unsupported hardware, so be aware to uninstall old SP1's and check out the hardware support issues.

But wait... there's more. The plot thickens.

Feb. 19th Microsoft released Release Candidate 2 of SP3 for Windows XP. Windows XP SP3 includes security fixes and improves stability, giving WinXP legs to say around even longer, and gives legs to debate about switching to VIsta versus staying with XP. WinXP also delivers better performance than Vista, even considering Vista SP1's performance improvements, and runs on older hardware much better than Vista.

Microsoft still plans to end availability of new sales of Windows XP software licenses this summer. But until Vista proves itself as an OS IT organizations are willing to being the transition, it looks like we're heading for a perfect storm this summer.

IT may rather fight than switch, holding on to WinXP as long as possible.
